On December 15th, Saul Alvarez makes both his Madison Square Garden and super-middleweight debut against WBA regular middleweight champion Rocky Fielding in front of a capacity crowd in New York City, live on DAZN.
Guadalajara native Alvarez, unquestionably boxing’s biggest pay-per-view superstar and considered by some to be pound-for-pound number one, will be determined to close out a turbulent 2018 on another high after dethroning Gennady Golovkin – one of the most dominant middleweight champions in recent memory – in a thrilling September rematch.
Fielding will be the fifth Englishman and the second Liverpudlian Canelo has fought, after dismantling Liam Smith two years ago in Texas alongside previous victories over Ryan Rhodes, Matthew Hatton and Amir Khan.
The Scouser has been enjoying a decent run of form after a devastating 2015 first-round knockout defeat to Callum Smith, most recently halting Tyron Zeuge in five rounds on away soil to capture the WBA ‘regular’ belt under the guidance of Jamie Moore.
Despite his position as a prohibitive underdog, ‘Rocky from Stocky’ possesses significant size and strength advantages over his Mexican counterpart, in addition to an unbridled confidence in his ability to upset the odds and score one of the biggest upsets of recent times in the process.
Naturally, Canelo will have other ideas, and will no doubt be looking to bolster his standing among the world’s best in claiming a secondary super-middleweight title whilst simultaneously reigning as the lineal and unified middleweight world champion.
Most believe he will successfully accomplish that objective on Saturday night and win in emphatic style against a powerful, physically imposing but comparatively inexperienced opponent – who will probably absorb a tremendous amount of punishment before succumbing to Canelo’s superior skills and sharper punching around the middle rounds.
