Ryan Garcia spoke of many potential fights he would take following his upset win over Devin Haney but now one of his targets Sebastian Fundora has responded to that call-out
In his last outing in April, Fundora sprung a major surprise by defeating Tim Tszyu for the WBC and WBO junior middleweight titles last March. A bad cut to Tszyu meant his vision was affected adn Fundora managed to do the better work to win an upset decision points.
The victory meant he had a rush of contenders eager for a shot at his now-unified 154-pound status including Tszyu was initially vying for a rematch but has now moved on to fight Vergil Ortiz, and both Terence Crawford and Errol Spence Jr. eyeing the title.
Unexpectedly, junior welterweight Garcia threw his hat into the ring after his victory over WBC 140-pound titleholder Devin Haney. Despite weighing in over the agreed limit, Garcia managed to secure the upset by knocking down Haney three times en route to a majority decision win last month.
That came after a tumultuous build-up which had many people worrying about the state of Garcia’s mental health. However, on fight night, he pulled it together and secured the biggest win of his career.
Despite Garcia’s emergence, Fundora remains nonchalant about the prospect of facing him, and when speaking to Fight Hub TV, he likened it to when welterweight champion Kell Brook dared to challenge Gennady Golovkin two weight divisions above his usual class.
“He’s not in my weight class. He’s coming up from 140; it’s like when Kell Brook fought GGG. It’s a different fight, of course, but you know that’s two weight classes down. We will see if he really does come up to 154. If he doesn’t, it’s all good, I don’t care.”
“I hope it’s not true because that was a good win for him. But if it is, that’s very disappointing. He proved a lot of people wrong, so to hear something like that – it’s not good.”
Whether or not Garcia climbs the divisions to 154 or finds more lucrative offers elsewhere, only time will tell.
