Shakur Stevenson has talked up a potential clash with one of his countrymen and fellow lightweights, which he has described as “intriguing” and a showcase of both “skill and power.”
Two weight world champion Stevenson is growing a reputation as one of the most talented fighters in boxing, and fans are fantasising about seeing the Newark man in with some of the biggest names in and around his weight class.
And of those names, there are none bigger than Baltimore puncher Gervonta Davis. Stevenson discussed the possibility of fighting him whilst appearing on the DAZN Boxing Show.
“‘Tank’ is the most intriguing fight. That’s a fight where you’ve got both boxing skills and power. He’s a complete fighter.”
“I think that’s definitely the best fight for me.”
“I don’t think the power will really play a part. I been in there with power punchers my whole life. I know for a fact if I can avoid a punch with people that are bigger, stronger, faster, I ain’t really too worried. More so, I just think it would be the biggest fight of my career. I’d gotta turn up to another level just cause the fact that I’m in there with another level.”
Despite the 26 year old’s comments, the match up does not appear to be on the horizon any time soon, with both men signed to different promotional companies who do not seem interested in making the fight at this moment in time.
Stevenson looks set to fight for the WBC lightweight world title, which will become vacant when Devin Haney moves up in weight to take on Regis Prograis later in the year.
This looks likely to be against southpaw contender Frank Martin, with the WBC ordering a fight between the pair to be next.
As for Davis, the Baltimore native has recently been released from jail, and is expected to be back in the ring either late this year or in early 2024.
Though a match up between the pair looks unlikely to happen in the short term, it seems inevitable the two prodigal talents will cross paths at some point.
