Shane Mosley: Jake Paul Can Become World Champion

Former three-weight world champion, ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley believes that Jake Paul could become a world champion one day.

Mosley trained Paul ahead of the Youtuber-turned-boxer’s fight with AnEsonGib in 2020 and although he is less involved with ‘The Problem Child’ now, still believes that the 26-year-old could shock the world.

The 1998 Fighter of the Year twice defeated Oscar De La Hoya, and achieved world honours at lightweight, welterweight and super-welterweight over the duration of a twenty-three year career, so knows what it takes to get to the top.

In an interview with FightHype.com, Mosley explained why Paul could fight for a belt in the future.

“It is a possibility, because he has the frame, he has the speed, he has the power, he might need to lose a little bit of weight, but he fights at cruiserweight so maybe he goes down to light-heavyweight.

It is going to be hard for him at any of the weights, once you get to that level, then he has got to work with the right people. But, like right now, it will probably take him, two, three, four years to even be in that section, that area. He is not there yet, but if he fights the right people, then maybe he can do it.”

Mosley went on to suggest a path for the American and believes that if he maintains his level of training then anything is possible.

“Maybe he should fight Chavez Jr or something, or he fights this guy [Tommy Fury] and he wins, then fight Chavez Jr. Anderson Silva fought him already, maybe he should fight him and see what happens. He has to step his way up, keep stepping his way up and the way he looks now, he can do it.

The way he is training now, continue to train, continue to believe, yeah, why not?”

Before Paul can begin to think about titles, he must first get past Tommy Fury, who he fights on Sunday night in Saudi Arabia. The event is available to purchase on BT Sport Box Office in the UK and ESPN+ for US fans.
