Shannon Briggs is still hopeful of a potential Tyson Fury fight in the spring.
The former heavyweight champion has been actively poking at Fury online with numerous tweets and pictures on a weekly basis. Fury has expressed interest in fighting ‘The Cannon’ but so far it remains unconfirmed whether the two will actually meet at some point.
The American has been out of the ring for nearly two years but despite the long lay off, he’s expecting big things from 2018.
“I’m looking forward to a huge 2018. I think the time off helped me. At 46-years old I’m in the best shape of my career. I’m going to become the oldest fighter to win the heavyweight championship, and the only man to win a title in three different decades,” said Briggs according to boxingscene.com
In an interview with TMZ.com back in December, Briggs revealed that he’s been in talks with Fury’s people about a potential fight in April.
“I feel like the fight is going to happen next year we’ve been talking for some time now. We’re looking at April right now,” commented Briggs.
Apparently, talks are still ongoing.
According to the Briggs, the fight could happen in Manchester or London.
“I believe I have another two to three years left in me. I’m fortunate to have boxing as a means to keep me going. Right now we are talking with Tyson Fury about a fight. It’s a good thing I don’t like him, it’s a better fight when that’s the case. As of now, the fight would be taking place in either Manchester or London,” told Briggs.
‘The Cannon’ has also battled his fair share of depression and mental health problems during his career.46-year-old is keeping a positive attitude and is still hungry for success despite his age.
“Nothing really has changed besides the competition getting younger. They aren’t as tough as the guys from my era. However, I’ve been around forever, and I’m still having fun.
“I’m just trying to show that being over 40-years old isn’t a death sentence for athletes. Through several points, I’ve suffered with depression, and I was fortunate enough to surround myself with good people to keep the fight going both in and out of the ring. Being positive is the way to go!”
Briggs is confident he can defeat Fury who has been absent from the ring since November 2015. He has even predicted a first round knockout win over ‘The Gypsy King’.
The plan for Briggs is to get a win over Fury and then set his sights on a world heavyweight title shot.
“After the Fury fight: They are going to have to give me a title fight, simply because I’m one of the most recognizable heavyweights in the world thanks to social media. Once I prove everyone wrong with a win, they are going to have no choice,” claimed the American.
The veteran boxer has been a familiar face on UK soil for years now. He’s been trying to get fights against David Haye, Wladimir Klitschko, Lucas Browne and others but none of the big name bouts ever came to fruition.
Fury has plans to make his comeback in April or May. The money fight for him is without a doubt the massive clash against Anthony Joshua which many have already touted as the biggest heavyweight fight in British boxing ever.
The 29-year-old former world heavyweight champion is currently training under the sun in Marbella getting ready for his comeback. The British Boxing Board of Control confirmed last week that they will hand Fury his professional license back when he clears his medical exam.
