After Joe Joyce beat Christian Hammer last weekend many questions put to ‘The Juggernaut’ were about him fighting for a world heavyweight title.
The WBO number one contender is in line for a shot at the Oleksandr Usyk-Anthony Joshua 2 winner and has even been mentioned as an opponent for Tyson Fury by the WBC champion’s co-promoter Bob Arum.
Teddy Atlas on Joe Joyce
Teddy Atlas, renowned boxing trainer and analyst, gave his opinion on the potential future world title challenger and was not very complimentary about the 36-year-old when speaking on his podcast ‘The Fight’.
“First of all, people should know he is an Olympic Silver Medallist. He’s a big, tough guy, there’s no doubt about that. He takes a good shot, and he has to take a good shot because of his lacking of technique in certain areas especially defence.”
“He’s a good puncher, a heavy-handed puncher, he’s not a snappy puncher but he’s more of a clubbing heavy handed puncher and he can wear you down because he keeps coming at you.”
“He’s slow, he’s predictable, he’s one-dimensional, his feet aren’t fast so him and Tyson Fury it doesn’t seem practical. The only thing practical about it is they’re both across the pond.”
“There’s more of an interest over there than there ever would be over here [in America]. Even though Fury is known everywhere. Look, they put 90,000 people in Wembley to see Fury with Dillian Whyte. If you could put 90,000 people in a stadium for Fury to fight Dillian Whyte, why don’t they put some people in there to see Joyce too.”
Atlas scolds Whyte’s performance against Fury
Atlas then turned his attention to Whyte who put in a poor showing against Fury on April 23 which ended in a sixth-round knockout for the champion.
“He [Whyte] came so unprepared. It’s like he didn’t understand what he was fighting. Really, it was shocking.”
“He got in there, he had no idea what to do. Go lose, I don’t care but show that you were prepared with what you’re dealing with.”
“It’s like he had no idea of the style, the abilities, and the weapons that he was gonna have to deal with that Fury brought to the table.”
