Terence Crawford has responded to the talk of facing Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez in the future, and has set out the terms he would need to make it happen.
The four-belt welterweight champion is the hottest prospect in boxing following his demolition of Errol Spence Jr – previously thought by many to be a 50/50 fight.
Now a two-division undisputed titlist, Crawford is getting the recognition many felt he deserved a while back. With that comes fight options, and outside of the Spence rematch he has been linked with the sports biggest stars.
One of them is Canelo, who is a four-division champ and currently holds all belts at 168lbs. ‘Bud’ Crawford previously dismissed the fight by saying his ceiling was 154lbs.
Speaking to The Breakfast Club, the Omaha native said he would be open to a catchweight of 158lbs or a middleweight contest.
“You know, we can do something at a catchweight. Probably like 160 or something, 158. That’d be cool.”
As appealing as it is for fans, it’s been four years since Canelo seen such a number on the scales, and has been more focused on moving up rather than down lately.
It’s not something Crawford is currently pushing either, given the Mexican is set to defend his super middleweight undisputed status against Jermell Charlo this September.
“They already focused on what they’ve got in front of them – Jermell. So I would never try to interfere.”
It may just be a fight fans miss out on given the plans both men have as well as the trajectory of their weight classes.
There doesn’t seem to be too much time to discuss it either – Crawford is adamant that he won’t outstay his welcome in the sport, and will retire on top.
Outside of a mega-fight with the Mexican, ‘Bud’ would like to face Charlo at 154lbs as a means to becoming three-time undisputed.
