Two-division world champion Tim Bradley has slammed the judging in Las Vegas after Teofimo Lopez’s controversial victory over Jamaine Ortiz on Thursday night, comparing the contest to a similar fight that had a contrasting result.
Teofimo Lopez made his first successful defence of the WBO super-lightweight title last week when he claimed a unanimous decision win over Ortiz, who was challenging for world honours for the first time in his career.
However, many felt that Ortiz, despite being evasive and reluctant to engage, did enough to pull off the upset, displaying classic ‘hit and don’t get hit’ tactics and only being out-landed in three of the 12 rounds.
Speaking to Pro Box TV, Bradley highlighted the lack of consistency, after the judges awarded a similarly uneventful contest in favour of Shakur Stevenson against Edwin De Los Santos in November, regardless of De Los Santos attempting to apply the pressure in the bout.
“I am still p***ed off. I have been p***ed off, all weekend long. Serious, you can talk to my colleagues, I have been p***ed off about that decision, Ortiz got robbed. Highway robbery in Las Vegas, Nevada.
“Let me tell you something, Shakur Stevenson [versus Edwin] De Los Santos, similar fight, less connections, less punches landed and guess who got the decision? Shakur Stevenson.
“De Los Santos was coming forward just as well as Lopez was, he was missing, he was frustrated, and he [Lopez] got the decision, a unanimous decision.
“These same three judges scored this fight, it was a boxing lesson people, that’s what Ortiz put on, a brilliant boxing lesson with a strategy and he didn’t get the credit for it. Shame, shame, shame on Vegas judges.”
