Tony Bellew has named the current fighter who he believes is the “most overrated” in world boxing today.
The former Cruiserweight world champion has made headlines recently for his views on Daniel Dubois ‘spewing it’s against Oleksandr Usyk. Bellew believes the Brit quit in his unified title challenge by not pushing to make the referee’s count in the ninth round.
In the aftermath, he also branded 140lber O’Hara Davies a ‘quitter.’
Now, speaking on Froch on Fighting, Bellew branded Davies the most overrated fighter in the sport due to his “quitting” tendencies.
“Ohara Davies.
He’s quit twice, I’ve seen him step up against Josh Taylor and he quit and he’s going on about how hw should be world champion. When he stepped up against Josh Taylor he got his a** absolutely handed to him on a plate and he spewed it, he watched the referee count to ten when he was on one knee.
What more can you say? A fighter goes down from a body shot, watches the referee count to ten then gets up and says he’s okay – what are they called in our world? I’ve been dropped on my face by Ovill McKenzie and got up at the count of four, been dropped flat on my back by Oleksandr Usyk and up at the count of seven.
I just believe in getting up and fighting no matter what shape you’re in.”
Davies has a record of 25 wins from 27 fights, with his two losses coming against fellow Brits in Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall. Since the Catterall defeat, the super lightweight has gone on a seven fight win streak and is now the WBA mandatory challenger for current belt holder, Rolando “Rolly” Romero.
In the fight against Taylor, referenced by Bellew, Davies was sent to the canvas for the second time in the fight in the seventh round and, although he got back to his feet when the action resumed, he turned his back, giving the referee no choice but to wave it off and invite critics to accuse him of quitting. The Brit denied it in the aftermath, saying he couldn’t breathe.
Although Davies is next in line to face Romero, the American is currently injured and a clash against Ryan Garcia has been muted, with Golden Boy promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, calling for the fight to be made. Davies has recently penned a deal with that promotional outfit.
