Former WBC cruiserweight champion, Tony Bellew has claimed that Tommy Fury should hang up the gloves if he cannot dispatch of Youtuber-turned-boxer, Jake Paul, at the end of the month.
Since retirement, Bellew has joined the DAZN commentary team and although Paul-Fury won’t be available to watch on the streaming platform, Bellew still had plenty to say about the high-profile bout.
In an interview on the DAZN YouTube channel, Bellew stated that the pressure is well and truly on the 23-year-old Brit, who is defending his family name.
“The best way to say it is that there is one guy going in here, with absolutely nothing to lose, and his surname ain’t Fury. Jake Paul has absolutely nothing to lose, he is labelled as a Disney-boy freak and a YouTuber. Tommy Fury has had his own brother say, ‘do not come home if you lose’.”
The proud Evertonian was quick to reference a famous clip from Prince Naseem Hamed, who believed that Chris Eubank Jr should have retired following defeat to George Groves. Similarly, Bellew had the same thoughts regarding Fury, should he lose to his American rival.
“I literally just need a meme putting up, of Naseem Hamed, saying you should finish. ‘I just think he should finish’ [if Fury loses to Paul].”
“I don’t wish bad on nobody, may the best man win, fair play. But, if you [Tommy] lose to him wow, wow, wow. Especially with the whole carry on from his old fella, Jesus.”
Paul will face Fury on Sunday 26th February in Saudi Arabia and the event will be available to purchase on BT Sport Box Office for fans in the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, fans in the United States will have to pay $49.99 for the action through ESPN+.
