Bob Arum has commented on Tyson Fury’s recent search for an opponent, and how likely it is that he scores a summer fight in England.
The World Heavyweight Champion has been active on social media in recent weeks, demanding that his team find him an opponent and calling out various fighters – some even from other combat sports.
It seems that the veteran promoter, who handles Fury’s US business alongside Frank Warren’s Queensberry in the UK, has been learning of the rumoured opponents and big fight plans at the same time as boxing fans.
Speaking to Boxing Social, Arum said that it was best to let his fighter ‘settle down’ before the team decide on something realistic to pursue.
“If you promote Tyson Fury, you have to wait until it all settles down. Tyson says a lot of things – I guess he’s serious when he says them, but then tomorrow he’s not so serious.
Eventually we understand where he’s at, both the Warrens and ourselves, and we make a fight for him. I think would be wrong for him not to have a fight before this contemplated winter fight against Oleksandr Usyk.”
Whether or not that’s to be a big stadium fight in the UK, Arum isn’t sure. He believes the timing may be an issue.
The idea of facing Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed championship this winter in Saudi Arabia is still on the table, so they may look at September for Fury’s fight beforehand.
“I’m not from the UK, but my understanding is that if you do a fight in August there’s nobody around. Everybody is in Portugal or Spain. I’d have to talk to my partners at Queensberry, but it seems unlikely that they would want to do a fight in August. We might have to wait for the beginning of September.”
The latest talk from ‘The Gypsy King’ has been centred on a fight in Australia. He has been linked with both Demsey McKean and cruiserweight champion, Jai Opetaia.
Arum’s words suggest a claim that the Opetaia fight is as good as ‘sealed’ is untrue.
