Two months after suffering the first loss of his career, Tyson Fury is preparing to avenge that defeat to the legendary Oleksandr Usyk and challenge for the unified heavyweight titles this December. As the sequel to the historic ‘Ring of Fire’ clash edges closer, Fury’s promoter has revealed his fighter’s training plans.
Fury returned to the heavyweight throne in 2020 with one of the most impressive wins ever seen from a British fighter on foreign soil, putting the hard-hitting Deontay Wilder on the back-foot and securing a phenomenal seventh-round knockout win.
Since then, ‘The Gypsy King’ made three successful defences of the WBC title, all of which were won by stoppages, ahead of his show-stopping showdown with Usyk in May.
A tightly-fought battle ensured, but it was Fury who took control of the contest through the mid-rounds and appeared to be well on his way to a points victory over the Ukrainian technician, until Usyk put his foot on the gas and banked the latter stages – almost pulling off a sensational knockout win of his own in the process but ultimately settling for a split-decision win.
As a result, Usyk has etched his name in boxing history as the first undisputed heavyweight champion since the turn of the millennium, but the razor-thin result has left Fury motivated to get his revenge and level the scores, activating his rematch-clause and signing for a second meeting with Usyk in December.
Speaking to Seconds Out, Fury’s Promoter Frank Warren outlined Fury’s plans, both inside and out of the ring, explaining that the 35-year-old is consistently in the gym regardless of whether he has a fight scheduled but adding that he expects a full training camp to begin in October.
“He had just come back from his holiday, I was hoping that he was going to come down to the [Joyce-Chisora] show but I don’t know what happened.
“He said that he had a very good holiday with his family he is in a very good place – as he has been every time that I have spoken with him since the fight. He is in a good place, and I think that he will start getting seriously into his training camp I would think sometime probably around the beginning of October.
“He ticks over every day because that is what he does, he is in the gym and he is in great shape anyway, but the serious stuff will start probably sometime in October.
“Tyson is not a fool; he knows what he has got to do in the ring and he knows what his game plan has got to be. The key to winning that fight was in the last fight, he knows what he has got to do.”
Meanwhile, Oleksandr Usyk has since vacated his IBF world title, with Daniel Dubois assuming position as world champion and opting to defend the belt against Anthony Joshua in September – possibly teeing up a mouthwatering all-British undisputed bout between ‘AJ’ and Fury if both were to be victorious.
