This past Saturday night at the Ford Center in Dallas, IBF welterweight champion Errol Spence (24-0-0, 21 KO’s) defended his title for the second time in style, stopping Mexican challenger Carlos Ocampo (22-1-0, 13 KO’s) in the opening round with an excruciating body shot.
Ocampo was undefeated with 22 wins and 13 knockouts coming into the contest, but ultimately succumbed to a devastating right hand to the midsection towards the closing seconds of the first.
“I wanted him to sustain a bit and give him some punishment, but the body shot got him and I dropped him.” said Spence in his post-fight interview.
“It was a great victory. It was really short, so it is hard to describe. He was a little bit awkward, but I caught him and was able to actually hurt him.”
Desoto native Spence has now extended his unblemished record to 24 wins with 21 knockouts.
Having dispatched of Ocampo with relative ease, boxing fans are now eager to see how Spence would fare stylistically against WBA champion Keith Thurman – currently sidelined with injuries – and new arrival to the division Terence Crawford, who captured the WBO title by dismantling Brisbane’s Jeff Horn in nine rounds last weekend.
