It was revealed this week that Devin Haney’s fight with Ryan Garcia would not be taking place in Las Vegas and now a reason has been given as to why that is the case.
Haney and Garcia are two young and exciting talents who have managed to turn their online war of words into a real-life fight that will take place on April 20th.
Haney is a two-division champion who has just picked up a belt at a new weight at the first time of asking after beating Regis Prograis.
Garcia, meanwhile, is on the rebuild having stepped up in April last year to fight Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis but ended up getting knocked out with a body shot.
Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya announced that the fight would take place at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, and while some top-level contests have happened here before, the biggest fights usually play out in Las Vegas, a more traditional boxing hot spot.
‘King Ry’ has been unhappy with the decision, explaining that he is attempting to shift the fight back to Vegas, insisting it should be at the MGM Grand.
De La Hoya has now been back on the social media platform X to explain why it is in New York, stating that they want to show the fighters are capable of being draws no matter if the east coast or west coast.
“@RyanGarcia and @Realdevinhaney can always fight in Vegas and sell out an arena. Together, they will sell out New York and mark themselves as the coast-to-coast star of American boxing.”
It is fair to say that this will be a huge fight with plenty of eyes on it, and the winner will very much assert himself as one of the kings of the modern game.
