Scotsman and former WBU boxing champion Willie Limond suffered a seizure while driving and is thought to be in a critical condition in hospital.
Limond was discovered unresponsive in his car on Saturday morning around 8 am in Heatherbell Road, Coatbridge.
It was local police who found him and he was quickly admitted to Monklands Hospital where his condition has been described as ‘critical’ by medical staff according to reports in the Daily Record.
The former British and Commonwealth champion has retired twice and come back to fight on two separate occasions before now and was due to return for a third time on Friday 3rd May against Joe Laws in the main event of a show at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow.
In anticipation of the fight, Limond spoke to IFL TV in February, expressing confidence in his upcoming performance: ‘I believe you’re going to witness the best version of me in this fight. Despite my age, I truly believe I will showcase my peak abilities on that night. I’m not joking.’
Joining Limond on the undercard was his son Jake, aged 20, who has been showing plenty of promise in the ring.
Limond’s accolades include becoming the Commonwealth lightweight champion in 2006, followed by claiming the super lightweight title in 2013, and subsequently adding the British super lightweight title to his achievements in 2014.
Throughout his illustrious career spanning 48 fights, Limond secured an impressive record of 42 wins and six losses, often facing off against some of Scotland and Britain’s most formidable fighters during his prime.
One of Limond’s notable bouts occurred in 2003 when he squared off against future world champion Alex Arthur in a highly anticipated all-Scottish boxing match.
The two fighters contended for the British crown, with Arthur emerging victorious via technical knockout on his path to becoming the WBO title holder.
Our thoughts are with his friends and family as we all hope for a swift recovery.
