Carl Froch has spoken abut what he thinks Ryan Garcia should now go on to do following his superb against-the-odds victory over Devin Haney this past weekend.
Nobody expected Garcia to come out with a win against Haney, who is a former undisputed lightweight champion turned junior welterweight belt holder. He has barely lost a round in his career and remains a dedicated professional outside of the ring.
That’s very much at odds with Garcia, who has been a man on edge these past few months, taunting his opponent, winding up onlookers, admitting to smoking and drinking during camp and plenty more.
However, he put all that to one side and put in the performance of his life against Haney, knocked him down three times and took the points decision at the end of the 12th round.
Garcia does not win the WBC world title though, because he came in three pounds over the weight limit and had to pay Haney a fair amount of compensation as a result.
Now, speaking on Froch on Fighting, ‘The Cobra’ gave Garcia his flowers, and Froch also said he would like to see him rematch Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis next.
“Regardless of what Ryan Garcia does next, I’d like to see the Gervonta Davis fight at a catchweight, but regardless of what Ryan Garcia does next he just needs to be given massive credit. That was a fantastic win.
“I don’t think he was in the best possible shape and he still pulled it off. Everyone thought Haney was invisible, too sharp, too fast, too well repaired. Barca’s got in there quite relaxed and nonchalant, talking madness in the build-up and put on a great performance.
“The only fight he’s lost is to Davis, he lost to a body shot while drained at the weight, so if you cancel off that loss and then this is Garcia back to his best.”
Garcia has already taken to social media to start naming who he might fight next so Froch surely wont have to wait long to find who he he goes for.
