David Haye raised a few eyebrows recently when he spoke about fighting Anthony Joshua in 2018.
The former world champion has been recovering from his Achilles injury and has not got an official opponent yet for this year. Haye has promised on multiple occasion that he will return the ring in December but the big question is: against who?
Before there can be any more talk about fighting Joshua, Haye has to get back in action. In a press conference yesterday, Haye explained his current situation.
“I’m speaking to a number of people. I don’t like to ‘well this guy or this close to happening’, all it does is bad luck. Until I’ve got it signed, sealed, and delivered – nobody knows. I won’t say maybe I’ve talked to these people, I won’t say I was this close with this guy. Once it’s signed that’s it,” said Haye in an interview with PSB Sports.
The obvious one for Haye is a rematch with Tony Bellew, especially after Eddie Hearn admitted that the fight is still a possibility and both fighters want it. Meanwhile, Haye didn’t reveal much of anything, except another announcement in a couple of weeks.
“I should know probably within the next couple of weeks and there’ll be some sort of an announcement. Things are looking good for 2017, getting back in action. I’m not gonna say who that’s against or what title it’s for or anything like that. Just gotta be patient everybody,” commented Haye.
Haye also clarified his Joshua call-out and what he hopes to achieve with that fight.
“At the moment he’s not on the radar. Realistically, after coming back from a major surgery, jumping in the ring with Anthony Joshua who is on such fantastic momentum, would be a little foolish. I need to get back in the ring winning. Once I am and if I’m back to where I believe I can be, then I’ll start beating the drum for that fight,” explained Haye.
We all know Joshua’s schedule is almost fully booked. ‘AJ’ will defend his heavyweight crown against the trio of Kubrat Pulev, Luis Ortiz, and Deontay Wilder. And if all goes according to plan – Haye has hopes of a classic all British fight.
“Hopefully he wins his fights, I win my fights, and we could potentially have the biggest all British fight in history,” summarised ‘The Haymaker’.
