With the Oleksandr Usyk-Anthony Joshua rematch officially announced for August 20 in Saudi Arabia fight predictions will begin to come in thick and fast.
A former WBC champion and a man who had so long been linked with a fight against Joshua has had his say. Deontay Wilder was asked for his pick by Elie Seckbach during a quick chat he had with ‘The Bronze Bomber’ who happened to be on the phone with trainer Malik Scott at the time. Wilder answered:
“I’m going with Usyk again.”
“I think a lot of people are. It’s boxing at the end of the day we’ll see. My pick is Usyk.”
The 36-year-old has been out of the ring since his defeat to Tyson Fury in their trilogy fight last October. Due to the severity of the contest and his failure to beat the WBC champion in three attempts many have wondered if the Alabama puncher will return to the ring. At a recent event last month in his hometown where he was presented with a life-size statue of himself Wilder hinted, he would fight again.
“I can’t stop right now. I must continue with my journey. I can’t end it like this.”
Seckbach asked Wilder if he was coming back or not:
“I may come back, I may not.”
“I’m having such a great time out of the ring. You gotta understand I make more money out of the ring than in it and I got a statue!”
