Having made his intentions clear about facing Gennadiy Golovkin the team of Chris Eubank Jr will this week begin talks to try and make the fight.
After Saturday night’s win for Dmitry Bivol against Canelo Alvarez a proposed rematch between the Mexican and ‘GGG’ for September 17 now appears off the table. Eubank Jr wasted no time in taking to social media and telling Golovkin that he wanted to face the WBA and IBF middleweight champion this summer.
Speaking to the Daily Mail, Eubank Jr’s promoter Kalle Sauerland said, “We will be in talks with them this week to see if it’s going to be an option.”
All plans will hinge on Canelo’s next move. The Mexican did appear keen to exercise a rematch clause to face the WBA light-heavyweight champion again. Bivol has said he would be happy to move down to 168lbs to fight Canelo for his undisputed super-middleweight title.
“There’s one thing that Canelo says in the ring that he’s going to have the rematch with Bivol, but it’s another thing exercising it in writing,” Sauerland added. “We’re just going to have to wait and see what happens there.
“We know the Golovkin people well. We’ve always said he’s the No 1 on the list of course. He’s the standing champion at middleweight and that’s the one that Eubank wants. We’ll have to just wait and see about the situation between Canelo and Bivol.”
