In a recent interview with The Star, ‘Special K’ Kell Brook updated his current situation.
The last two fights have been rough for the former welterweight champion. Brook got battered by Gennady Golovkin last year and then lost his IBF title to Errol Spence Jr back in May.
“I will be fighting again, but just not this year,” Brook confirmed.
According to Brook, after two losses he’s taking time off but will eventually push himself back into title contention.
“I know I will have to push myself to get back in there but I still want to be a champion,” he said.
The former IBF World welterweight champion took a big risk when he went up to middleweight to face the one and only, Gennady Golovkin. It did not pay off as Golovkin pummeled his opponent and seriously hurt Brook’s eye.
The Sheffield boxer got TKO’d in his latest fight against Spence Jr and the lingering eye injury again needed immediate attention after his loss to the American.
After the aforementioned rollercoaster, Brook is still unsure whether to return to welterweight.
“As for which weight, I’m not 100% on that. It is well known how hard it is for me to get down to welterweight but if the right fight is there,” commented ‘Special K’.
Obviously, the opponent that financially makes the most sense for Brook is none other than Amir Khan
Brook threw a bit of fuel into the fire when he replied to Khan’s Floyd Mayweather call out on Twitter.
“Get in with me n I’ll fast track ya into collecting your pension,” tweeted Brook to Khan.
In August Khan made his stance quite clear and said that he won’t do the fight as long as Eddie Hearn is involved. Though lately, Khan has been hinting that he might be open to fighting Brook in 2018 despite the promoters presence.
“I’d still like to see Brook and Khan, and hopefully we can make it,” said Hearn in an interview with Fighthype.com
