Mike Tyson has named a heavyweight superstar as the top fighter in the world.
Known affectionately as ‘The Baddest Man On The Planet’, Tyson set the heavyweight scene alight from his debut in 1985, and continued knocking people out and making headlines all the way up until his retirement in the early noughties.
Having been at one stage the infamous poster boy for the sport, Tyson knows what it’s like to be at the top of the pile.
Speaking to First Take, the heavyweight legend felt there was no argument against his namesake, Tyson Fury, being number one currently.
“The top fighter in the world has to be Tyson Fury. He’s the biggest draw in boxing.”
Undefeated, two-time world champion and with overseas victories over both Wladimir Klitschko and Deontay Wilder, ‘Iron’ Mike’s pick holds weight.
Fury has been branded an anomaly in the heavyweight division due to his tricky style and the way he can move his 6′ 9″, 270lb frame. It was his path to success in the early stages of his career, but the jerky points-winning dance has recently made way for some knockout power.
The man from Morecambe recently had a chance to cement his legacy by facing fellow champion, Oleksandr Usyk, to crown the big men’s first undisputed champion since Lennox Lewis over two decades ago.
It’s well known that negotiations crumbled amidst financial disagreements and demands. It could, however, be revisited towards the end of the year, with the Middle East reportedly ready and willing to pay big money to stage it.
In the meantime, Fury must hold onto his WBC belt and perfect record, and it’s believed that the first hurdle in doing that will be against Andy Ruiz Jr or Zhilei Zhang.
