Tony Bellew is currently hard at work preparing for his May 5th rematch against David Haye. But he took time to voice his displeasure over the Canelo Alvarez Clenbuterol drama in his column with The Metro.
Bellew argued that it’s grinding his gears that when a fighter at the top of the sport is seemingly found out for PED usage, it is almost always brushed under the rug and ‘The Bomber’ has called for change.
“I’m sick of saying it, but this is what’s wrong with boxing.”
Bellew also took aim at Canelo’s contaminated meat defence. Bellew does not believe that meat caused the trace level of Clenbuterol to appear insisting that it would have taken a sizable amount of meat for that to happen.
“I’ve heard this contaminated meat defence… it’s a good alibi, but Canelo would have to eat about five kilos of contaminated meat for that to happen.”
“How true can that be? Fans have been asking why I haven’t made a comment on Canelo. I haven’t made a comment because no one cares.”
Bellew added, that he has preferred to keep quiet over the situation, given his previous outlandish comments on past fighters who were found guilty had little effect.
“What difference does it make? The organisations and governing bodies don’t care, and they certainly don’t care what I say.”
“What is the point of me coming out and saying, ‘ban him for life’? No governing body has any desire to step up.”
“I am struggling to find a way to declare Canelo as a genuine drug cheat, but the investigation hasn’t even begun yet and they’re declaring him innocent?”
“Do I class Canelo in the same group as Alexander Povetkin and Luis Ortiz? No. They’ve failed on numerous occasions.”
Can you give someone like Canelo the benefit of the doubt? He’s never failed a test before… so maybe.”
“Ultimately though, my stance is the same: Test positive for steroids and you should get a lifetime ban.”
“Once the first fighter gets a lifetime ban, regardless of the circumstances, watch how quickly this all stops.”
“In my opinion they needed to ban Povetkin and Ortiz for life when they failed a second time. Ban them for life. That’s a stern warning.”
