Adrien Broner has always been a controversial figure in the world of boxing and now he has given a shock answer as to who he thinks is the number one fighter in the world right now.
After reaching the heights of being a world champion and then falling by the wayside and spending lots of time out of the ring, Broner looks to reignite his career on June 7 when he takes on Blair Cobbs at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.
Broner is now 34 and was last out with a 10-round unanimous decision win over Bill Hutchinson last June, though Hutchinson was not anywhere near world championship level.
Ahead of his next fight, he was asked by Fight Hype about the best in the world right now, and while he praised Terence Crawford, had a surprise pick for who he views the best in the world.
“Terence, Terence Crawford. For me it would be Terence Crawford. If we speak specifically boxing, Terence. But if we speak about who is the number one guy, Gervonta Davis.
“When you go to a ‘Tank’ fight it’s not just a fight, it’s an event, and the the world comes to see him. A lot of people want to see him win, a lot of people want to see him lose.”
Crawford’s inactivity has meant that for some he has slipped down the pound-for-pound lists having not fought since his superb win over Errol Spence Jr last July which made him undisputed in the welterweight division, a feat he had already accomplished at super-lightweight.
He went on to speak about why he loves Davis, who he has known since he was 14.
“You know why I respect him the most? I know a lot of people would have took that position he got now and they probably would act differently, but he still looks at me like a big brother.
“No matter about the money, the name, the fame, he still come around me and is like that’s big bro. That’s what I respected about him and I love him to death.”
Davis is next out on June 15 against Frank Martin with many big fights to be made further down the line that can see him solidify his position at the top end of the pound-for-pound rankings.
