Terence Crawford’s former promoter Bob Arum has weighed in on his chances in a potential mega fight against Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
High on confidence after his supremely impressive showing against Errol Spence Jr back in July to claim the undisputed welterweight crown, Crawford has admitted he would be willing to jump up a whopping three weight classes to take on Mexican icon Alvarez.
However, in a recent interview with Fight Hub TV, Arum advised his former charge to look in a different direction, stating ‘Canelo’ would “wipe the floor with him.”
That said, the Top Rank boss added that he believes there is not a welterweight on the planet capable of defeating ‘Bud,’ describing him as “unbeatable” at the weight class.
“I think Canelo wipes the floor with him! I love Crawford, and I told you when he fought Spence that Crawford would beat the hell out of him.”
“But Canelo is a different proposition. It’s an interesting fight, but I think there’s only one winner. Canelo is used to fighting at a particular level, and I don’t think that Terence can hurt Canelo. But Canelo can hurt Terence.”
“But at 147, I think Crawford is unbeatable.”
Though appearing reluctant when the idea of a clash with Crawford was first floated to him, Alvarez has since warmed to the fight, though has stated he is not willing to fight a pound below the 168lbs limit.
However, fans will likely have to wait sometime if the pair are ever to get it on, after Spence triggered a contractual rematch clause for another shot at ‘Bud,’ meaning that fight will be next provided terms around the weight class can be agreed by the two teams.
Should he stay at 147 as advised – which is highly unlikely given he’s made it clear his goal is to become three-time undisputed – many fans would like to see rising star Jaron ‘Boot’s Ennis get his shot.
It remains unclear who Alvarez will take on next, after successfully defending his four super middleweight world titles against Jermell Charlo this past weekend.
