Undisputed super middleweight king Canelo Alvarez looks set to face Jaime Munguia in an all Mexican clash on Cinco de Mayo weekend, but a shock twist means it may not play out the way people thought.
The 33-year-old’s previous bout against Jermell Charlo was with Al Haymon and PBC, but a dispute over the next fight appeared to signal the end of their current partnership, just one fight into a three-fight deal.
Matchroom Boxing promoter Eddie Hearn had teased that the Mexican star could return to DAZN for his next outing, with all signs pointing to the potential Canelo vs. Munguia fight taking place on the streaming service.
However, ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez now suggests that Canelo is on track to extend his relationship with PBC and thus compete on rival platform Amazon Prime Video, with Hearn commenting on the twist when talking to FightHype.
“I don’t think it’s official yet, we’ll have to see. Obviously he’s with PBC, isn’t he? I don’t know how that contract sits, was it a three-fight deal? I know Munguia is a DAZN fighter so I’m not sure how that’ll play out with Golden Boy. We’ll see what plays out.”
Since his dominant 12-round clinic over Charlo back in September last year, Canelo has been on the hunt for a worthy opponent to challenge for his titles at 168 lbs.
He was initially linked with destructive puncher David Benevidez, who now moves up to light heavyweight to take on former world champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
The fight ultimately never came to fruition, with a clash between Canelo and Munguia now expected to be officially confirmed soon.
