Eddie Hearn has spoken out about a potential clash between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Artur Beterbiev, and described a fight between the pair as a “bloodbath.”
Canelo came unstuck in his bid for the WBA light heavyweight world title against Beterbiev’s countryman, Dmitry Bivol, last May – a defeat which the Mexican is expected to get an opportunity to avenge later this year.
And when pressed by BoxingScene about the possibility of Canelo getting a crack at the other world champion at 175lbs, Hearn did not mince his words.
“Canelo vs. Beterbiev is a hell of a fight. That’s a bloodbath.“
“Right now, Canelo is thinking about coming back against his mandatory. And then he wants to challenge himself in September against Dmitry Bivol.”
Pound for pound star Alvarez is expected to defend his undisputed super middleweight crown against Britain’s John Ryder this May.
Jalisco, Mexico is reportedly the frontrunner to host the bout, in what would be a long overdue homecoming fight for one of the greatest Mexican boxers of the past 20 years.
As Hearn alluded to, a rematch with Bivol is likely to be next for Canelo should he get past Ryder this Spring, however this will likely be at super middle as opposed to light heavy.
This is said to be due to Bivol’s desire to add more belts to his collection as opposed to Canelo dragging the Russian down to a weight that is more advantageous to him.
