Filip Hrgović has addressed speculation linking him to a potential showdown with Moses Itauma later this year.
Talk of a possible Hrgović versus Itauma fight has continued growing in recent weeks after reports suggested the unbeaten British heavyweight could face a top-10 contender during his planned return on August 8 at The O2 Arena in London.
Hrgović himself has also been repeatedly mentioned as a possible option, especially as the Croatian continues rebuilding momentum after recent wins over Joe Joyce and David Adeleye.
However, ahead of his upcoming fight against Dave Allen this weekend, Hrgović admitted he has heard the rumours but revealed he currently knows very little about the situation.
Filip Hrgović says no talks have taken place for Moses Itauma fight
When addressing the press backstage at the final presser event, Hrgović was asked whether terms had already been agreed for a fight with Itauma, but Hrgović quickly shut down the suggestion.
“No, no one spoke anything about that fight with me, with my team,” Hrgović said. “I don’t know anything about that.”
The Croatian explained that this information came from the same place as everyone else’s.
“I just saw on the internet that he’s looking for an opponent,” he added.
Despite dismissing claims of formal negotiations, Hrgović did leave the door open to the possibility.
Hrgović says August timeline could work for Itauma showdown
Hrgović explained that timing could make the fight more realistic if he comes through his clash with Allen unscathed.
“It’s I think 10 or 11 weeks after my fight,” Hrgović said. “There is a possibility that if I win and if I’m healthy that this fight happens.”
The heavyweight contender also believes the schedule would give him enough time to recover and prepare properly for Itauma.
“It’s enough time for me to rest and have a camp,” he explained.
Although no agreement currently exists, Hrgović finished by sending a clear message regarding his availability.
“I’ll be healthy and ready for Moses in August after this fight.”
For now, Hrgović’s immediate focus remains on Allen. Speaking during the final press conference, He admitted he believes he has the power to stop the ‘White Rhino’ but also acknowledged the Brit’s toughness and durability.
The Croatian contender praised Allen’s chin and suggested the fight may prove more difficult than some expect.
While Hrgović refused to guarantee an early knockout, he insisted the result would remain the same regardless of how the contest unfolds.
Whether by stoppage or on the scorecards, Hrgović made it clear he is fully confident of leaving with victory on Saturday night at the Eco-Power Stadium in Doncaster, England.
As for Hrgović vs Itauma, his latest comments are likely to fuel further discussion of a possible summer showdown.
