Gilberto Ramirez has broken his silence following his WBA and WBO cruiserweight titles loss to David Benavidez by posting an emotional message on Instagram.
Benavidez produced one of the biggest wins of his career. He stopped Ramirez in the sixth round at T-Mobile Arena on May 2 to capture the cruiserweight world titles. The victory further strengthened Benavidez’s growing reputation as one of boxing’s top pound-for-pound fighters.
A few days after the fight, Ramirez took to Instagram to reflect on the defeat and share his thoughts with fans.
Ramirez says defeat ‘hurts’ after Benavidez loss
In the caption of his Instagram post, Ramirez admitted the result was painful but promised that the setback would not define his career.
“Saturday didn’t go the way I planned,” Ramirez wrote.
“The loss is painful, the hurt is real. But I’ll sit with it, learn from it, and come back stronger. This is not the end.”
The former champion also gave credit to Benavidez for his performance and preparation leading into the fight.
“I tip my hat to David,” Ramirez added.
“His success didn’t come overnight, and that only motivates me more.”
Ramirez refuses to make excuses after title loss
Ramirez also pushed back against attempts to discredit Benavidez’s victory, making it clear he fully accepted the outcome despite discussions surrounding an elbow issue during the fight.
“Don’t discredit what he brought; he was the better man that night, and I have nothing but respect for him and his team for the preparation they put in,” Ramirez wrote.
“Elbow or no elbow, it’s a fight at the end of the night.”
Despite the loss, ‘Zurdo’ hinted that he would welcome another opportunity to face Benavidez in the future.
“If we ever share that ring again, I’ll be better prepared, and I will get my revenge,” he stated.
Ramirez plans time away before return
For now, Ramirez revealed he plans to step away from boxing temporarily and focus on his family before deciding what comes next in his career.
“For now, I’m taking time with my family and enjoying the summer,” Ramirez wrote.
The defeat marked one of the biggest setbacks of Ramirez’s career as he was stopped for the first time in his long career. And only the future will tell how he comes back from this major setback.
Meanwhile, Benavidez became the first boxer to hold major titles at 168, 175, and now 200 pounds. He had called out Canelo Alvarez and Dmitry Bivol in his ring interview. He later also expressed a desire to fight Jai Opetaia.
Many options are available for ‘The Monster’ to choose from. It will be interesting to see who he faces next. He has mentioned that he would likely be back in action by September.
