Jake Paul, one of the most controversial men in boxing today, has released a list in which he names his top active boxers. Let’s get in to it…
Most boxing fans have a pound for pound list, or at least a pound for pound number one. The fighter or fighters, regardless of weight class, who they think are the best on the planet. Jake Paul is no different, although his top ten is actually a top thirteen. The list is as follows…
- Tyson Fury
- (Tie) Terrence Crawford & Errol Spence
- (Tie) Artur Beterbiev & Dmitry Bivol
- Oleksandr Usyk
- (Tie) Amanda Serrano & Katie Taylor
- Shakur Stevenson
- Devin Haney
- Jermell Charlo
- David Benavidez
- Naoya Inoue
Paul provided some reasoning alongside the names. For Tyson Fury, the best boxer in the world according to the young fighter, it was dominance that got him there.
“First and foremost, Tyson Fury has just been so dominant in the heavyweight division for so long. He beats every heavyweight by KO/TKO including Usyk and there hasn’t been a heavyweight in the history of the sport who hasn’t fallen off eventually and Tyson Fury has remained on top and think will retire on top. However, what Usyk has done from cruiserweight to heavyweight has been impressive and his dominance, versatility, and boxing ability is second to none.”
One name that’s notably absent is Saul ‘Canelo’ Álvarez – a stalwart on most lists of fans, pundits, and fighters alike. Paul seemingly knows that the omission would draw questions, so he provided an answer.
“Bivol knocks Canelo off the list not only for beating him at 175 but for being willing to go to 168. We all know it’d be the exact same fight at 168 which bumps Canelo off this list and Canelo ducking Benavidez and Charlo.”
‘The Problem Child’ has expressed an interest in fighting Canelo at one stage in his career. Perhaps call him a duck – something we know the Mexican doesn’t take kindly to – is an attempt at setting that up.
Finally, and with credit to Paul, he includes two female fighters on his list. It’s something he’d like to see more of. Many outlets have their own, separate list for the women’s game, but Paul may be right to merge them – after all, isn’t pound for pound across all divisions without exception? About the inclusion, he said:
“Moving on, it pisses me off that most pound for pound lists don’t include Amanda or Katie. Like wtf. This is boxing, not just men’s boxing and both have a lot more accolades than some names YALL put on your SH**TY lists.”
Fair point, well made.
