In the midst of all the drama and attention surrounding last weekend’s undisputed heavyweight title showdown between Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk, Matchroom Boxing have decided to join the party an announce an event of their own – headlined by one of British boxing’s most popular active heavyweights.
Since debuting with Matchroom on the David Avanesyan vs. Josh Kelly undercard in February 2021, Johnny Fisher has established himself as a likeable contender and a capable fighter, growing his fanbase on social media and rising up the rankings and establishing himself as a potential threat to the British title in the near-future.
During his three years as a professional, ‘The Romford Bull’ has registered eleven wins with ten victories coming via stoppage and he has significantly increased the quality of his opposition in his last two bouts – winning the Southern Area title against Harry Armstrong and then making his U.S. debut against Dmytro Bezus in Las Vegas, where he won by first-round knockout.
Eddie Hearn has now made the decision for Fisher to headline his first card but is giving his man no easy touch, pitting the 25-year-old up against bridgerweight world title challenger Alen Babic in a clash that is unlikely to see the final bell.
Fisher said: “I have no words other than I am locked in and ready for the hardest fight of my life.
Babic said: “Johnny and his dad have definitely over-ordered this time in picking me for his next fight……I am going to enjoy teaching this POSH! boy some very Savage lessons. I look forward to the fight but no university education can give Johnny the appetite for what’s coming his way!”
Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn added: “The time has come for the step up and for Johnny and his incredible support to have their own night in London, and what a fight to do it in.
“Johnny ‘The Romford Bull’ Fisher against Alen ‘The Savage’ Babic promises to be an explosive all-action Heavyweight WAR that will have fans on the edge of their seats on July 6.
“The Copper Box Arena will be jumping as The Bull Army takeover to watch their man step up against Croatian knockout artist Babic in the toughest test of his career to date.”
After becoming a famed knockout-artist in his own right, ‘The Savage’ made a huge leap to step up and face Lukasz Rozanski in Poland in a bid for the WBC bridgerweight title but suffered a brutal first-round knockout defeat to put an end to his unbeaten run as a professional.
Eleven months later, Babic returned to the U.K. scene on the Fabio Wardley vs. Frazer Clarke bill and got back to winning way with a sixth-round stoppage against Steve Robinson.
Fisher-Babic has all the makings of a heavyweight shootout that is unlikely to see either man taking a backwards step when they meet on July 6th at the Copper Box Arena in London.
