Tyson Fury mentioned in his press conference after the undisputed fight this past weekend that Oleksandr Usyk had been taken to hospital for a CAT scan on a potentially broken jaw and now Team Usyk have given an update on that.
The 12-round fight saw plenty of action with both men landing some big shots. The biggest came in the ninth round when Usyk managed to stun Fury and sent him falling about the ring.
A standing eight count was given which helped sway the cards at the end of the fight. Usyk was given it by two judges and Fury one, which meant he became the first undisputed champion in 25 years.
After the fight rumours swirled that Usyk had broken his jaw. Speaking to Boxing King Media, Usyk’s promoter Alex Krassuyk has updated on that.
“So, when we went to the locker room, the local doctor came up to inspect, and Usyk felt some discomfort in his upper jaw. The doctor said anything could happen and this is a very sensitive area so you need to be inspected as fast as is possible.”
He then explained the decision of the team.
“Normally then you have some common processes like doping tests, paperwork, and it all needs to be done, so you need some time and want to have some words with your teammates.
“So we did that, took the doping test, then the doctor insisted [the hospital visit] had to happen very fast. We did all the paper work and Egis Klimas said we need to skip the press conference and go to the hospital. But Usyk said we need to comply with our obligations, let’s got to the hospital after the press conference.
“So Usyk showed up, he showed his jaw was not broken. He had this pain a long time before, it’s not serious but he felt discomfort. When a doctor heard he had pain there, and the doctors here in Saudi are not too experienced in boxing, he sent him to the hospital.”
Fortunately, there was no broken jaw.
“It was nothing major. He went after the press conference, they did the exams, and it’s something like a one-week recovery. Thank god he’s safe and sound.”
A contracted rematch has long been talked about so it is now up to Fury as to whether he invokes that later in the year.
