Ryan Garcia proved a lot of doubters wrong when he defeated Devin Haney and he has now called out a potential shock next opponent where he would likely be another big underdog.
‘King Ry’ put in a superb performance as he dropped Haney three times in the fight on his way to a majority decision win, handing Haney his first professional defeat in the process.
The one issue with the victory was that Garcia missed weight by 3.2lbs, meaning he was ineligible to win the WBC super-lightweight title.
Garcia announced in the post-fight press conference that his days at 140lbs may already be numbered, and has instead surprisingly called out current WBC and WBO super-welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora.
“I had a vision to fight Fundora at 154, I don’t know why. I just feel like I could knock him out. I know that’s really random, I just feel like I could get a title at 154. I’ve fought guys that big before, and knocked them out in sparring. Shout out Fundora though, no disrespect.”
It would see Garcia jump up two weight classes for the potential bout at 154lbs, with Fundora fresh from his victory over Tim Tszyu last month to become champion.
A more likely scenario for ‘King Ry’ would be either a second fight with Gervonta ‘Tank’ Davis, who Garcia lost to last year, and an immediate rematch with Haney.
While he may have came up short in the fight, there was some shock good news for Haney in the immediate aftermath, after he received a title boost.
