Ryan Garcia will be chasing an undisputed world champion should beat Gervonta Davis in Las Vegas on April 22.
The two young, undefeated stars cross promotional and broadcast boundaries to make the fight, which could end up being the biggest boxing event of the year.
Whilst the odds are against Garcia in the form of a 136lb catch weight, he’s confident of a win against the Baltimore star, and is already looking to the future. He told the Raw Talk Podcast he has his sights set on Devin Haney.
“Right after this we calling out Devin Haney. Bring on Devin. That’s another prime on prime fight. Bring on Devin. I fought him six times in the amateurs. Now we need to have the seventh one.”
The amateur results between the pair reportedly sit at three apiece.
Whilst fans will like the prospect of Haney facing off against Garcia in the paid ranks, there are perhaps two of the hardest obstacles in boxing standing in the way.
A month after Garcia goes up against ‘Tank’ – who has a rematch clause should he lose, perhaps complicating Garcia’s future plans – Haney defends his undisputed lightweight crown against Vasiliy Lomachenko.
Speaking of amateur stints, the Ukrainian has one of the most impressive ever – a record 396 wins against one defeat. It’s long been his goal to become undisputed in the lightweight division after being champion at both featherweight and super featherweight.
Should the bigger, younger Haney manage to solve the Lomachenko puzzle, and Garcia put an end to ‘Tank’s vicious knockout tendency, the pair may be on a collision course – although at what weight they end up fighting is yet to be decided, given both are keen on 140lb rather than lightweight.
