Former opponents Terence Crawford and Shawn Porter have clashed during conversations with each other after Crawford made a certain claim about popularity.
These two American welterweights have already settled their differences once and for all in the ring back in 2021 It was then that Crawford secured his ninth consecutive stoppage victory in a historic fashion by becoming the first man to stop Porter.
In one of his many displays of devastating power and speed, Crawford retained his WBO world title belt in fine fashion. Despite Porter’s valiant efforts to contain the champion, Crawford’s dominance prevailed and lead to two knockdowns in a brutal tenth round.
Ultimately, Porter’s father intervened, waving the white towel and ending the fight. The undefeated Crawford expressed satisfaction with his performance at the time and then set his sights on a showdown with longtime rival Errol Spence, which finally came last summer adn same him become the undisputed four belt king of the division.
Now he is moving up in weight to challenge Israil Madrimov for the WBA and WBO interim World Super-Welterweight title on August 3rd in the first Stateside event under the auspices of Turki Alalshikh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia.
Ahead of that, he spoke to the now-retired former champion Porter on Matchroom Boxing’s YouTube channel. Porter said Crawford has a lot of love in his native Omaha but that he has struggled to pick up fans outside of Nebraska, but Crawford sees it differently.
“I gotta disagree with you on that Shawn. Everywhere I go in the world it’s all respect, all love, people tell me that they rate me as one of the best fighters in the world today so I wouldn’t say just today I got the love, I always got the love, a lot of people hate so it’s like there’s not love there but there always love.
“I appreciate people who come out and show support because August 3rd is going to be a tremendous night of boxing, cause I can’t remember ever there being a card as stacked as this.”
He was then asked if had always been his goal to be multi-weight champion.
“It’s not a priority but it’s up in the air. You gotta understand, it’s potentially two belts on the line. If Fundora don’t fight me after this, I’m WBO and WBA champion, if he do, then that’s three on the line. There’s only one more to get so potentially in three fights, that’s undisputed.”
It seems as though this move sees Crawford continue to chase greatness and maintain his status as pound-pound king.
