Golovkin is gearing up for his upcoming Cinco De Mayo showdown against Vanes Martirosyan, they will do battle at The StubHub Center in California.
Martirosyan will provide the opposition in a fight that the undefeated Kazakh will look to make middleweight history.
If Golovkin defeats Martirosyan this weekend, he will equal the defence record set by the phenomenal 2-weight world champion, Bernard Hopkins of 20 defences.
Golovkin added he believes his tenure as champion is more impressive than Bernard Hopkins’ 10-year reign as middleweight champion.
‘GGG’ believes his resume boasts a more ‘stronger and bigger’ body of work compared to ‘The Executioner.’
Golovkin went on to cite that each of his defences has been against fresh meat, while Hopkins took part in rematches and a prolonged series of bouts during his tenure as a middleweight titleholder.
“I feel like a star, like a star because, just if you check Bernard’s opponents probably you understand that my record is much bigger, is much stronger, bigger,” Golovkin said.
“This is a good situation for me and for my career and for my fans, of course. That’s it.”

“I think it’s great for his history, for boxing history,” Abel Sanchez, Golovkin’s trainer, said of his fighter making a 20th straight title defence.
“If you look at his record, he hasn’t had any rematches in there. So everybody that he’s fought has been a new opponent;” Sanchez added.
“The great Bernard Hopkins fought twice against Antwun Echols and three times against Robert Allen.”
“So we’re fighting new guys every time. I think by tying and hopefully, if he decides to stay at middleweight or decides to stick around. Breaking the record in the future.”
Sanchez, furthermore went on to claim that he believes Golovkin will be remembered alongside the likes of Sugar Ray Robinson, Marvin Hagler, Carlos Monzon and a handful of others in the annals of middleweight greatness.
“it’s great for boxing history.”
“It’s good for his story and [will be] looked back [on] with fondness.”
